Environmentally Responsible

As part of the companys commitment to environmental sustainability, Alter Eco works only with producers who employ certified organic farming practices and avoid foreign inputs, such as genetically engineered plants, petroleum-based and synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge and irradiation. This helps preserve the land and health of the people who farm it. Alter Eco currently supports 46,600 acres of organic farmland.

Working with Pur Projet of France and using ADEME and Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) methodologies, Alter Eco continually calculates the environmental impact of every activity, including field preparation and planting, harvesting, processing and shipping. CO2 mitigation is achieved through agroforestry and other crop diversification practices, like intercropping. In cooperation with the Peruvian Amazon ACOPAGRO cooperative, Alter Eco has planted 7,423 trees to offset the CO2 emissions generated from its North American activities. The ACOPAGRO cooperative has also mitigated 207,856 tons of CO2 since 2007 by intercropping cocoa with other trees.

This means the food producers are paid enough to ensure sustainable production and living conditions, and from 10% to 30% higher than wages paid in the local markets.
